   The High Plains Drift Inn is the original "do it your-self" elk hunting experience. It is located in south central Colorado which is some of the best elk country in the world. Arguably the best for amount of elk per area. The High Plains Drift Inn is owned and operated by RV Robertson, the nationally acclaimed elk specialist.
RV was not satisfied being simply "just" an other hunting lodge. He realized the need of self determined hunters and with that in mind he created the High Plains Drift Inn. 

    The HPDI is for people who want an elk hunting education; who want the satisfaction of learning to understand  and think like one of the most difficult big game animals in north America. These people were not fulfilled with the outfitter doing all the thinking for them and did not need the deadly certainty of the high fence. People desiring these things, are well provided for and have many options unlike the "do it your-self" kind of guy. Thus RV created the first interactive educational elk hunting resort. Supplying these intrepid hunters with the technical support they deserve.
 
    RV endeavors to teach the art of elk hunting. Focusing not only on the information needed for hunting in our area, but also at teaching elk specifics that can be used nationwide. Located in areas 80 and 81, believed to be the highest concentration of publicly hunt-able elk in the world, we have plenty of game to practice on. RV provides the resources needed by adventuress hunters who hold down a full time job. Taking the guess work (and a lot of the dirty work) out of your hunting vacation.  47 years of experience has left RV with a wealth of knowledge that he places at the disposal of every hunter, for free! By knowing the terrain like the back of his hand, and having known the area through wet/dry RV keeps up with how the herds move and can show you on the map where the elk are. And unlike an outfitter he is not restricted to one or two areas but can send you where ever the elk are.

   Our lodge provides the security and many of the amenity's of an outfitter, taking some of the work out of your hunt. No more arguing about who has to do the cooking and dishes when you all come into camp after dark. No more taking spit baths out of a pot or the frigid mountain stream to keep your scent down. And that infernal rock that always ends up right in the middle of your back won't be there to hound you at our ranch. Not only does RV keep up with the elk and give you free tips he actually gives a free complete seminar on everything you will need to know to begin hunting. The seminars are so in depth that any level of hunter from beginner to professional elk guide can learn something to make their hunt better. Over the years RV's techniques have helped down innumerable elk, including several in the 400 class range. And thats not just on private land, but also on public free chase land! You may not kill an elk every time you come but you will have a good time and a first rate vacation. RV says that if you hunt with us three years in a row and still don't kill an elk you can hunt with us for free the next year. That is how sure he is of his techniques!
